Clothing was rare in the GDR. So the daughter of the country’s most successful pop composer went to the tailor before her very first appearance. He didn’t have much choice either.
Inka Bause, who is currently celebrating her 40th anniversary of the stage as a musician, once performed a Jumpsuit made of diaper fabric when she first appeared on GDR television. The deficiency economy of the GDR was to blame. “I really wanted to put on a one-piece,” reported the 56-year-old of the German Press Agency. But: there was no need to buy it in the GDR. So it went to the tailor. “The only thing he had was for meter goods white cotton diaper wool.”
So the then 16-year-old daughter of the successful GDR hit composer Arndt Bause started her career in the unusual piece of clothing in the 1984 New Year’s TV show-and with the song “Spielverderber”.
In the GDR she liked “everything that was colorful, hung around her arms and neck or put it in her hair,” said the entertainer about her style at the time. Colorful shoelaces included a ribbon in the hair. “There wasn’t that much colorful – you had to get creative.”
