Robert de Niro will receive the honorary gold palm of the Cannes Film Festival At the opening ceremony of the 78th edition, as confirmed by the festival.
As part of this honor, De Niro will also give a master class on the Debussy Theater stage for festival attendees on May 14.
De Niro has been a frequent presence in Cannes over the years. His last visit to Croisette was in 2023 for the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon of Martin Scorsese. De Niro presided over the jury of Cannes in 2011.
“I feel a great passion for the Cannes Festival”said of Niro in a statement from the festival. “Especially now, when there are so many things in the world that separate us, Cannes unites us: narrators, filmmakers, fans and friends. It’s like returning home.”

De Niro is one of the most beloved figures of contemporary cinema. His career at the Cannes Film Festival is extensive. In 1976, he starred in two films in competition: 1900of Bernardo Bertolucciand Driver taxiof Martin Scorsesewinner of the golden palm.
Opened the festival in 1982 with The King of Comedyfrom Scorsese, and the following year he presented Once upon a time in Americathe last movie of Sergio Leonebefore returning to the croisette with The missionof Roland Jofféwhich also won the palm.
De Niro was last seen on the screen in the political thriller Zero Day from Netflix and in Alto Knights of Barry Levinson.
The Cannes Film Festival of this year will be held from May 13 to 24.
