New chance of dismissal

The menendez brothers known by the Netflix series “Monster” can hope for freedom. A judge will negotiate her sentence.

It is a case that has been moving the United States for more than three decades. Now the brothers Lyle (57) and Erik Menendez (54), who shot their parents in their luxury property in Beverly Hills in 1989, could get a chance of freedom after 35 years in prison. A judge in Los Angeles granted the application for a new negotiation on Friday, as reported.

The brothers have been affirming for years that they had acted in self -defense in the murder of their parents after they had been sexually and physically abused by their father for years. The former district prosecutor of Los Angeles, George Gascón, had supported the new negotiation and made an application. However, his successor, Nathan Hochman, tried to withdraw this application – but failed in court. Therefore, the appointment will take place.

“Justice has won over politics”

“Today is a good day. Justice has won over politics,” said Mark Geragos, the brothers’ lawyer, after the hearing. The two prisoners followed the events in the court by video from a prison in San Diego. The current prosecutor Hochman, on the other hand, remains skeptical: “The Menendez brothers have not admitted in 30 years that they lied through their alleged self-defense.”

New negotiations next week

The renegotiation of the sentence is scheduled to take place on April 17th and 18th. If the court decided in favor of the brothers, they could be released after 35 years behind grids.

In addition, the Menendez brothers have two other ways that could lead to freedom: in June there is a routine hearing for probation. The California governor Gavin Newsom mercy could also be used. He has already instructed the state probation commission to carry out a risk assessment to determine whether the brothers would represent an “unreasonable risk” for the public if the brothers would be released.

The case of the Menendez brothers received great public attention last year from the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”. Lyle and Erik, then 21 and 18 years old, killed their parents José and Kitty Menendez in August 1989 with 14 shots from shotguns. They were sentenced to life imprisonment, actually without possibility for premature discharge.
