CDU boss Merz is one of the few politicians with a pilot license. On a TV show, he is now asked whether he can still be held at the wheel himself as a Federal Chancellor.
Can CDU boss Friedrich Merz still fly as a private pilot if he is a chancellor? In the ARD show “Caren Miosga” he admitted: “Then I didn’t ask anyone if I could.” At the moment he refuses to ask this question. “You have to fly certain hours to keep the license,” said moderator Miosga. Merz replied: “I have had it for a year since yesterday, and now let’s see what I can do.”
Merz is a passionate pilot. “Flying has always been the dream of my youth. When you bump through the cloud cover, see the blue sky and the engines walk peacefully – that is a great pleasure for me,” said Merz in the summer of 2022 of the magazine “Bunte”. Shortly before, together with his wife Charlotte, he flown to Sylt with a private plane for the wedding of the then Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP).
