The eventful life of Margrethe II in pictures
Queen Margrethe II led Denmark Land for 52 years through good and difficult times – and mastered many crisis himself. She celebrates her birthday on April 16.
At the age of 31, Margrethe II took over – her full name, Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid – from her late father Frederik the ninth on January 14, 1972. She is the country’s first female ruler in 600 years. During this time, the Danish rain was experienced a lot. Weddings, births, deaths and also one or the other crisis. Margrethe II completed numerous state visits in her almost 52 years at the head of Denmark’s monarchy – but in early 2024 she thanked, completely surprising for the Danes. On January 14th, her son Frederik took over the throne.
In the meantime, Margrethe is enjoying her retirement, without having completely withdrawn from the public. The long -time monarch celebrates its birthday on April 16. It will be a proud 85 years. Margrethe will spend the day again with the royal family at Fredensborg Castle around 30 kilometers north of Copenhagen and is expected to wave back to the onlookers who gathered in front of the castle in honor. She can also look forward to a small concert that will give the music band of the Royal Guard for her during the wax release.
The rest of the day is celebrated privately, with a lunch from Frederik and Mary and a dinner with family, friends and representatives of the courtyard. All over the country, the Dannebrog, the Danish flag, is raised in honor.
