Funny show, serious expressions: “LOL” starts in sixth round
Laughing is healthy, it is said in the vernacular. In the Amazon show “LOL”, however, a completely different formula applies: if you smile, you fly out of here.
A singing kitchen drawer, a gurgling tap and a fart armchair should force ten entertainment professionals to laugh: The first two episodes of the sixth season from the comedy series “LOL: Last One Laughing” can now be called up at Amazon Prime Video.
The rules have not changed since the surprise success in 2021: ten celebrities are blocked in one room for six hours and must not laugh, smile or grin. 40 cameras observe every facial pull. Anyone who violates the rules twice flies out. Those who last the longest get the “LOL” cup and 50,000 euros for a good cause.
“It is a request that you have cuffs in front of,” admits actors and “LOL” newcomer Florian David Fitz in a dpa conversation. “It is not that I am a person who has no sense of humor. But it is still another number, people who don’t want to laugh to make you laugh.”
Lach yoga with a serious face
The entertainers who are damaged to seriously try to get each other out of the concept by performing performances on a small stage. Actor Jürgen Vogel sings, for example, an improvised gaga love song, comedian Till Reiners organizes a round laugh yoga-in which laughter can only be imitated.
But often there are no jokes or actions that make the participants laugh. “I was most scared of these small, social interactions because they pass automatically. So a small smile for confirmation, a polite smile, you can’t easily turn off,” explains Fitz.
In fact, host and fun brake Michael “Bully” Herbig does not know a mercy and presses the buzzer while smiling. The laughing end is then transferred via video evidence. The entertainer Riccardo Simonetti, known as a happy nature, is also new in season six.
“At some point I got used to radiating such a basic friendliness. And displacing it was an enormous step out of my comfort zone.”
These stars are damn serious about “LOL”
The “LOL” cast is completed by the newcomers Ariane Alter (“Late Night Age”), Lutz van der Horst (“Today Show”), Helene Bockhorst (“Quatsch Comedy Club”) and Giovanni Zarrella (“The Giovanni Zarrella Show”), as well as the comedians Hazel Brugger (for the fourth time) and Ralf (second) Round).
“LOL” is one of the most successful comedy formats in Germany and won the German Comedy Prize and the German TV Award. Such shows are particularly important this year, says Simonetti. After all, the basic mood in the country is currently rather depressing.
“The last few weeks have been an enormous challenge for the state of mind. It is simply a difficult time and I can understand everyone who is currently going to laugh.” For “LOL” that would be at least the basic requirement for victory.
