Willem-Alexander and Máxima have given the starting signal for a sporty day of action. They also tried the games themselves.

King Willem-Alexander (57) and Queen Máxima (53) opened the annual sports day for children in the Netherlands this Thursday, April 17th. In the “KoningsSpelen” (in German: “Königspiele”), the motto is: “Breakfast together, do sports and have fun”, as the Dutch Royals emerges.

Joy of badminton and tug of war

Almost 1.3 million children from 6,300 primary schools take part in the sports program of the action day. “The ‘Kending Spelen’ traditionally take place on the last Friday before the royal day,” continues. “In 2025, this is not possible due to the May vacation and the Good Friday. This year, Thursday, April 17th, is dedicated to the common healthy breakfast and sport.”

Willem-Alexander and Máxima got an idea of ​​the games offered when they visited a primary school in Roosendaal. After the traditional royal breakfast, in which the two sat with the children on a table held in orange, they showed their sporting ambition in various disciplines such as tug -in or when balancing a balloon with the help of a badminton racket. The royals obviously had great fun supporting the children in their sporting activities.

On April 27, Willem-Alexander celebrates his 58th birthday. The Koningsdag, on which the monarch’s birthday is celebrated across the country, is a national holiday in the Netherlands. Everywhere the king is celebrated with parades, concerts and festivals, decorations and clothing are kept in orange, the color of the royal family.
