A Rolex was and is never cheap. However, if you are looking for a rarity from ancient times today, you need deep pockets – and luck at auctions.
A conventional Rolex from the current catalog costs something between 7000 and a maximum of 108,000 euros. Very rare watches scratch – depending on the diamond trimmings – in individual cases on the million mark. However, the latter only applies to absolute exceptional models that cannot be obtained from every jeweler. This includes, for example, the sinfully expensive rainbow rolex of football star Harry Kane, reference 116595RBOW. And even his execution does not cost a million, and he finally lacks the diamonds on the bracelet.
Ten times Rolex above the million mark
With the most expensive Rolex watches that were still available from auctions, the million only marks the start. Because oldies, who spent fifty years and longer on wrists and in drawers from collectors, athletes and racing drivers, are not available in rough quantities. Sometimes even models appear, of which you no longer knew that they once existed.
The undisputed price driver is and remains Paul Newman. Watches that were connected with him achieve the highest prices at auctions. The absolute record won one of his first Daytona models, which he received from his wife Joanne as a gift in 1968 and kept wearing the wrist visibly throughout his life. Expensive daytona models do not necessarily have to touch the skin of the racing driver-it is enough if they look like one of his watches and have the same dial. A “Paul Newman” daytona is difficult to get under half a million.
Of the emperor Alte Rolex
Other celebrities also give the watches a special value. For example, there would be Jack Nicklaus and Sir Eric Clapton, whose Rolex watches broke through the million mark at auctions. If the attributes of “prominent previous owners” and “particularly rarely” even come together, the border is wide open. One of the most expensive watches in the Rolex world is the timepiece of the last Vietnamese emperor Bao Dai, who did not want to be satisfied with a clock during a stay in Geneva and made Rolex sweat quite a bit.
