Francis is buried as a seventh bishop of Rome in Santa Maria Maggiore. It is expected that numerous heads of state and government will personally pay the last honor to the Pope.
The choice of Francis’ successor
The cardinals of the church are ordered to the funeral of the Pope and the choice of its successor. However, only cardinals under the age of 80 are approved for the conclave, the choice of the new Pope. The conclave begins between 15 and 20 days after the death of a Pope, in this case in early May. A two -thirds majority is required for a successful choice of the Pope. If no candidate gets this majority, the ballot papers are burned and black smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. If a cardinal receives the required majority, accepts the choice and selected its papal names, white smoke rises.
