Abba star Björn Ulvaeus not only revealed how he spends his 80th birthday on April 25, but also looked back at the Swedish pop group. He has revealed what the two divorces within the band had.
Björn Ulvaeus says: divorces have given ABBA music a depth
Björn Ulvaeus was married to ABBA member Agnetha Fallskog, with whom he has two children from 1971 to 1979. The other members Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson were from 1978 to 1981. “Agnetha and I had a friendly divorce,” says Björn Ulvaeus. “When we got married, we were young, in 1979 we found that we had developed apart.” At that time, the two were part of an “incredible creative force”, “it was simply irresistible to continue,” says Ulvaeus about the further existence of the band until 1982. “If Agnetha and I hadn’t remained friends, it would not have worked.”
Ulvaeus explains that a certain “reasoning talent” is probably part of making music together after a divorce. The musician explains that there was even advantages for Abba’s music after the separations: “The divorces and the fact that you continue to play with someone in a band that you once loved have given our music an additional depth.”
The fact that the band did not crash despite the great success also had a simple reason: “We were no longer young than we were famous. We had been in the Swedish music business for ten years when it started with Abba.” The four were two couples and not boy band with groupies. Drugs were never offered to them. “Perhaps the people around us just took good care. But maybe they also thought: ‘Forget it, these are these two bourgeois Swedish couples!'” However, alcohol flowed in quantities. “Too much. That’s why I stopped it.”
Ulvaeus reveals that he did not plan a party for his 80th birthday. “Then I am in Spain with my family: four children, nine grandchildren, we will be a large group.”
In February 2022 it was announced that Björn Ulvaeus and his long -time wife Lena divorce after 41 years. The two married in 1981 and have two adult children. In 2024, the musician married his wife Christina, with whom he showed himself publicly in July 2022.
