Just a few minutes after the official date for the funeral of Pope Francis (1936-2025) from the Vatican on Saturday, April 26th at 10 a.m., the first fixed commitments from heads of state and government from all over the world are already collapsing. In any case, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier (69) will travel to Rome for Germany.
The still reigning German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (66) has already agreed to participate in the funeral. According to the matching media reports, his speaker confirmed this on Tuesday afternoon. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen (66), is also expected in the Vatican. Even if an official confirmation in this case is still pending, that Leyen has already agreed to participate.
In addition, the French President Emmanuel Macron (47) said on Tuesday on the edge of a press conference: “We will be at the Pope’s funeral.” Polish President Andrzej Duda (52) also announced his trip to Rome. He will be on site on Saturday as well as the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (48).
Trump comes to Rome, Putin doesn’t
Even before the appointment was announced, US President Donald Trump (78) announced his arrival. Trump announced that he would take the trip to Rome alongside his wife Melania Trump (54). Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj (47) also announced that he would travel to the funeral service. Both Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (79) and Argentine President Javier Milei (54) have already confirmed their participation, according to media reports.
In any case, the Russian President Vladimir Putin (72) will not be there. The latter already made it clear via the Kremlin that a trip to Rome was not planned.
