The Dutch king does not take part in the funeral of Pope Francis, but celebrates the royal day in Doetinchem.

Terminellization for the Dutch royal family: While the world is saying goodbye to Pope Francis (1936-2025), King Willem-Alexander (57) will not be present at the funeral in Rome. Instead, the monarch will celebrate the traditional royal day in Doetinchem as planned on April 26, 2025.

The decision raises questions, since traditionally head of state are present in burial bursts. Particularly interesting: In the official message it is not explicitly mentioned whether Queen Máxima (53) – like the late Pope -born Argentine – will also remain in Doetinchem or may travel to Rome as a representative of the royal family.

Government takes over representation in Rome

The Dutch government will be represented by high -ranking representatives at the funeral service for the Pope. According to the Königshaus, Prime Minister Schoof and Foreign Minister Veldkamp will travel to Rome to take part in the funeral.

“On behalf of the government, Prime Minister Schoof and Foreign Minister Veldkamp take part in the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome,” the statement said. The absence of the king is thus compensated for by the presence of the top government.

Royal couple was affected

Despite his decision not to travel to the funeral, König Willem-Alexander, together with Queen Máxima, expressed his deep dismay on the death of the Catholic Church Map of the Church on Monday, April 21st. The royal couple is “deeply sad” by the death of the Pope and would “appreciate the memory of him in gratitude”,

Königstag is going on

The king’s decision to prioritize the King’s Day in Doetinchem could be interpreted as a sign that national obligations for the royal family have priority. The King’s Day, which celebrates the birthday of the Monarch (April 27), is an important national holiday in the Netherlands and is celebrated all over the country.

The celebrations in Doetinchem will take place as planned, but with an adjustment on schedule: The live broadcast on Dutch television does not begin until 12 noon, “with regard to the funeral of Pope Francis” – with regard to the funeral taking place from 10 a.m.

In addition to King Willem-Alexander, other members of the royal family and the royal family are also expected in Doetinchem. Whether Queen Máxima and her three daughters will be there is not listed individually in the current message.
