Unemployment continues to fall – 362,101 out of work

There are currently 289,901 people registered as unemployed with the Public Employment Service, 5,000 fewer than a week ago. There are 72,200 people in training courses, so 362,101 people are currently out of work. The decline in unemployment has slowed somewhat, in the previous week the number of people without a job fell by 7,083. According to the Ministry of Labor, 136,000 fewer people are currently unemployed than a year ago. Since the opening steps on May 19, unemployment has fallen by 37,600.

“The openings have brought about a significant recovery in the labor market,” said Labor Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) on Tuesday at a press conference in Vienna. Additional recovery effects are to be expected from further opening steps in night gastronomy. “At the same time, the crisis is still having an impact on the labor market, which is why the restart bonus must be extended until the end of the year in order to support sectors such as tourism, which are urgently needed,” said Kocher.

“We want to get people back into employment and tourism urgently needs this workforce,” said Tourism Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP). The extension of the restart bonus until the end of the year is the right measure at the right time, namely in the middle of the preparations for the summer season. ”

299,600 people are currently registered for Corona short-time work, but this does not correspond to the number of employees actually on short-time work. The effects of the openings on short-time work will only be able to be estimated after the short-time work accounts for May from August, said the Minister of Labor. The number of billed and funded people on short-time work for phase 4 is currently around 230,000.
