Many Rolex models have had their own nicknames for decades. But what is actually behind terms like “Pepsi”, “Hulk” or “Paul Newman”? An overview.
Every Rolex actually has a real name. But it only refers to the model. Submariner stands for a diving watch, Daytona has always been the chronograph, Datejust is a watch with the date and GMT master offers several time zones. Very easy.
To distinguish the different variants, Rolex uses so -called reference numbers. The consequences even certain patterns that can be learned over time. If there are four or five digits, around 16610, it is an older clock. There are currently six digits, around 126500. The first part of the number refers to the model, the penultimate number on the bezel and the last number stands for the material.
How a Rolex reference is made up
This is followed by a suffix, for example Blro. Or VtNr. These letters are abbreviations for French colors, gems and other watch elements. So Blro means nothing more than “Bleu Rouge”, ie “red blue”. VtNr – you guess it – means “Vert Noir”, ie “green black”.
In conversation with the star Different watchmakers pointed out that you prefer to work with the names – because the clocks are called and Rolex has not officially awarded any model of one of the known cosen names. “When someone comes to my workplace and asks if I can check his ‘Hulk’, my neck hair will stand up to me,” said a watchmaker who does not want to be named.
But the number and letter salad is not very practical for outsiders and interested parties. Therefore, Rolex cannot save itself from the fact that the watches are commonly called differently than was actually determined in the catalog.
