Five years after his conviction, Harvey Weinstein is on trial again. The prosecutors speak of “dream opportunities as weapons”.
Once he was one of the most powerful men of Hollywood, then he became the symbol of an entire abuse system. Five years after his first conviction, the resumption procedure against the fallen Filmmogul Harvey Weinstein (73) began in New York. After his former judgment was lifted by the Court of Appeal, the Oscar-winning producer is now on trial again for serious allegations.
The 73-year-old has to answer for the accusation of rape a woman and forced sexual acts in two other women. As in his first process, Weinstein vehemently denies all accusations raised against him.
“The more they defended themselves, the more violent he became”
After a lengthy jury selection process due to the high level of awareness of the case, the public prosecutor’s office has now held its opening plea in the same courthouse in Manhattan, in which the first trial took place. Prosecutor Shannon Lucy, who once used such influential producers “dream chances as weapons” against the female plaintiffs.
“The accused wanted her bodies, and the more she defended herself, the more violent he got,” said Lucy, according to court observers. Weinstein had “enormous control over those who worked in the television and film business because he decided who belonged and who was not”. It was clearly spoken in court: “He had all power. They had no.”
Long -term jury selection completed
The opening plea only started after the last jurors were selected on Tuesday – more than a week after the selection process begins. Ultimately, seven men and five women were selected. Due to the scope of the case and its importance for the #metoo movement, the jury selection had proven to be particularly complicated.
The first trial of Weinstein in 2020 ended with its sentence to 23 years in prison and was celebrated as a milestone of the #Metoo movement, which was significantly triggered in 2017 by revelations about its behavior. Last year, however, an appellate court had lifted the judgment and ordered a new negotiation.
