Sandro Wagner will step down as assistant coach of the German national team after the Nations League. He wants to become a head coach himself.
Sandro Wagner (37) clears his place as assistant coach of Julian Nagelsmann (37) with the German national football team. He would give up his job at the German Football Association after the UEFA Nations League final Four.
The end as an assistant coach takes place at your own request. “I would like to take the next step soon. It is no secret that it is my great wish to work at some point as a head coach. With the start of my football teacher training in January, this has become increasingly clear to me,” Wagner explains his decision in a statement. It was a “huge honor” for the German national male team and he would be “grateful” for the chance and memories of home European Championships 2024.
Julian Nagelsmann wishes “all the best”
Since September 2023, ex-Bavaria star Sandro Wagner has been a assistance coach of national coach Julian Nagelsmann together with Benjamin Glück (38) and was considered his closest confidant. Nagelsmann had trained the Wagner of the same age as an active player in Hoffenheim. “I can personally understand Sandro’s wish to become head coach and respect his decision. We had a good and always transparent exchange,” said the head coach. He wishes his CO “all the best for the professional steps that follow”.
DFB sports director Rudi Völler (65) also says goodbye to Wagner’s farewell. The trainer had a decisive role in the success of the national team at the European Championship last year. “I am sure that we will soon see Sandro as head coach on the sidelines. He will go his way!” Emphasizes Völler.
Together, the team now wants to win the Nations League in their own country. In the first semi -final, Germany will be against Portugal in Munich on June 4th. The final rises four days later.
