“When you look at the history of cinema, there was no gap between the two categories,” Hamaguchi added. “It’s a very important issue,” added Night Shyamalan (“Sixth Sense”), who shied away from the horror film auteur label.
“When you make a commercial film, the story is supposed to be just for the audience, to make them cringe or make them laugh,” he summed up. “Independent cinema is about a specific person, a new perspective on the world. You leave the cinema changed, you are no longer the same, although it is more difficult, ”he adds.
“My hope is that people can see a little bit of me in my movies, and that I can see them too,” he added.
The competition began yesterday and will culminate on February 16 with the delivery of the Golden Bear and the rest of the prizes. It is shorter than usual, when it lasted 10 days.
The gala night kicked off with “Peter Von Kant”, the latest work by French François Ozon, a tribute to the film “The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant” (1972) by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Few stars are expected on the red carpet. French Isabelle Huppert, an actress who has stood out for her risky or controversial roles, will receive an award for her entire career.
A total of 18 films compete in the official competition, including the Spanish “Alcarrás”, by Clara Simón, “One year, one night”, by the Spanish Isaki Lacuesta, about the Islamist attacks in Paris in 2015, and “Manto de gemas ”, by the Mexican Natalia López Gallardo.
The Berlinale was held entirely online last year, a format that was disappointing to critics and audiences. This year is “an exercise in resistance”, in the words of its artistic director, Carlo Chatrian. “It is only when films are seen by people that film culture takes full effect,” added the event’s executive director, Mariette Rissenbeek.
In addition to Ozon, other well-known directors compete for the Golden Bear, such as the French Claire Denis (“Avec amour et acharnement”), Ursula Meier (“The Line”) or the South Korean Hong Sangsoo (“So-Seol-Ga-Ui Yeong-Hwa”). The Italian Dario Argento, already a legendary name in suspense cinema, directs his daughter Asia in the film that will be seen out of competition, “Occhiali Neri”.
