US director Martin Scorsese knew the late Pope Francis. He is now working on a documentary. It is about international understanding and educational work.
Hollywood director Martin Scorsese wants to honor a heart project by the late Pope Francis with a documentary. In the planned documentary “Aldeas – A New Story”, unpublished talks of the Pope with the director have previously been found, as can be seen from a message from Scorseses production company Sikelia Productions. The last detailed interview of the Pope in front of a film camera should also be part of the documentary. The head of the Roman Catholic Church died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
The core of the documentary produced by Scorsese are short films that are created in communities all over the world. Before his death, Francis described the project as a “extremely poetic and very constructive project”, because it is about the roots of “what human life is, human convoy, human conflicts (…) the essence of a way of life,” said the message.
Scorsese emphasized that today it is more important than ever to talk to each other across cultures and listen to each other. Share your own stories and experiences, help “to understand and appreciate how each of us sees the world”.
Indonesia, Gambia and Italy are therefore one of the first countries to deliver short films for “Aldeas – A New Story”. The Aldeas initiative is part of the organization “Scholas Occurrentes” founded by Pope Francis, which promotes global educational projects.
Scorsese mourns the loss of Francis
Scorsese was received more often in the Vatican of Francis. For him personally, his death was a profound loss for him, the director previously wrote in an appreciation. “I was lucky enough to know him and I will miss his presence and warmth. The loss for the world is immense. But it leaves a light that can never be wiped out.”
Scorsese, son of Sicilian immigrants, was a valet in his youth. In the meantime, the Catholic filmmaker himself wanted to become a priest. He addressed the Christian faith in several feature films, including in the drama “Silence” (2016) about the persecution of Jesuit mission priests in Japan in the 17th century.
