The son of tennis legend Boris Becker, Noah Becker, makes art. In his work, he also hugs his father in his arms.

30 new works by the artist Noah Becker are currently hanging in the Berlin Gallery Deschler. Title of the exhibition: “Face Your Fear – Stod yourself”. One of the most striking paintings: an oversized, golden credit card called “B. Becker” on it. A work between pop art and personal provocation. With wink – and biographical explosive power.

“The work is called ‘No Limit’,” explains Noah Becker in an interview with the “Bild Zeitung”. “It is actually a picture of my father’s credit card. A lot of what I do is ironic and ambiguous. It should make it laugh – but also to think.”

The fact that Noah immortalized his famous father Boris Becker in gold is more than just a playful gesture. It is an artistic replica for a public drama that has employed Germany and the international tabloid press for years.

Boris Becker, once tennis wonderkind, triple Wimbledon winner, national icon-and later: symbol for a deep case. In 2017, he was declared unable to pay in Great Britain due to financial difficulties. Despite high advertising revenues, managerial items and gloss career, Becker is said to have accumulated debts in the millions. In 2022, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in London for delinquing bankruptcy, of which he spent eight months in a British prison.

Against this background, Noah Becker’s painting gets a double meaning. “I use my art to make sense of things,” he says. “People are often fascinated by the rich and famous – and project a lot in.”

Noah also processes Boris Becker’s biography in his works

Another work of the exhibition is entitled “You signed up for this – you decided on it”. Here, too, Becker combines biography and social criticism. “I grew up with sports. My first word was ball, not mom or dad,” he says. The canvas was edited with various balls – tennis, football, basketball -, the German flag is emblazoned in the background. “We don’t decide where we are born in. But we are often rated exactly for that.”

Becker also shows provocation with attitude in another work. For “Stay as you are”, he was photographed naked at the Berlin Victory Column at night, “dressed” only with a brush. “For me, this is not an act of provocation, but of honesty,” he says. The nudity: a symbol for taking off all projections. “The beak men around me symbolize the voices, opinions, attributions that patter a day. I stand right in the middle – and above.”

As Boris Becker thinks about his son’s painting, it is not known. So far, he has not publicly commented.
