Nicolas Cage about a new film “The Surfer”: At film shooting he fought with sharks and flood

He prefers to surf the wave of life: In his current current, Nicolas Cage (61) plays a businessman who returns to his Australian hometown, hoping to fulfill his dream of buying back the beach house in which he grew up to surf the sun with his son. So much for the theory. But not only a group of influential locals prevents him from riding waves on the canvas.

Nicolas Cage cannot surf: “Lorcan and I talked about it in detail. He knows that I wish I could have reached this point,” said Cage about his conversations with Lorcan Finnegan, the director of the thriller. At the end of the film, he would have liked to conquer the surfboard. Although the actor “loves the end of the film” and “not a single attitude”, he admits that he would have dreamed of adding an epic surf scene from “Big Wednesday” from 1979.

“I thought I would really like to take this recording, but I didn’t have the time to improve my skills so far that we could have done it,” sighed Cage. The actor not only had too little time to practice, but was also slowed down by Mother Nature. “We had things like difficult weather conditions and whether they believe it or not, shark reports and so on,” said the Hollywood star.

“I surfed, but every time I tried it, I was torn into pieces,” he recalled from previous attempts. “I was simply overwhelmed and literally got stuck in the flood. (…) I climb up on the surfing linen as I hit a tumble tree and I could have died,” the Oscar winner continued. “Now that I have a little child, I don’t know if I still want to do that.” His third child was born in 2022. The mother is Cage’s fifth wife, Japanese Riko Shibata (30).

But he doesn’t want to give up yet. “The goal,” said the American with Italian roots to the industry magazine, “is to retire, surf, drink red wine and eat spaghetti.”
