Prepare a smoked trout as exactly as possible, like the four-toque chef Lukas Nagl (34) from the “Bootshaus” in Traunkirchen? Even the experienced TV veteran Tim Mälzer (51) quickly reaches his limits. In his TV show “Kitchen Impossible”, he worked on this very task, which the Austrian-Israeli cook Haya Molcho had given him. As his opponent in the culinary show competition, she had Mälzer Nagl’s cooking tasted and then imitated without further assistance. The process and the result can be seen on VOX on Sunday at 8:15 p.m.
“It was definitely entertaining,” says Nagl and laughs: “I had to pre-cook, Tim Mälzer tried to imitate it and he succeeded – more or less.” And then he laughs again.

A special artisan technique is required to process the freshly caught trout, a bit of miso is added to the sauce, regional products such as sorrel and rhubarb are part of the dish – such skills and small details quickly make a big difference in taste.
Even if curses were thrown through the kitchen during filming and the result of the German no longer had that much in common with that of the Austrian – “You can definitely tell that Tim Mälzer is a chef through and through, he can make something out of nothing that tastes good,” says Nagl to his colleague Rosen.
The shooting team spent four days in the Bootshaus restaurant on Lake Traunsee, 40 minutes of which will ultimately be shown on TV. Lukas Nagl quickly explains why cooking programs on television guarantee ratings: “Cooking is a craft that appeals to all the senses – even the ears, because I can tell from the rustling of the potato salad whether it has the right consistency.”
Ready for cooking battle
He would be willing not only to pre-cook, but also to dare the culinary competition in another episode of “Kitchen Impossible” as a challenger to Tim Mälzer. “Sure, I’d like to do it, but I’ve got enough to do anyway,” says the father of three. “But one thing is clear – if I compete, I’m sure to win!” And then he laughs again.
