According to the public prosecutor, forensic doctors consider it likely that he passed out while trying to climb over the balcony railing. An autopsy has proven alcohol and cocaine in large quantities. According to the investigators, the fatal fall was not a suicide. In February 2025, the indictment was dropped against three out of five suspects in the case. Two other suspects are accused of having provided Payne with cocaine.

With Cheryl Cole, Liam Payne was dating from 2016. Son Bear was born in 2017. The couple announced the separation in July 2018. From October 2022 until his death, the musician was lined up with Kate Cassidy. According to “Guardian”, it is not legally taken into account as an heir.
