With the German Film Award, one of the most important awards in the industry will be awarded on Friday. Who is nominated for Lolas, what is new? An overview.
A gripping drama, meticulously and calmly told: With ten nominations, the thriller “September 5” about the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich is a favorite at the German Film Award. On Friday (May 9th), decides who takes the Lola home. Then one of the most important awards in the industry is awarded with the German Film Award in Berlin.
What films go into the race for the Golden Lola?
“September 5” by Swiss director Tim Fehma tree tells the events at the Olympic attack from the perspective of a US television team that should actually report on the competitions. Instead, the journalists become live reporters of a hostage-taking of Israeli athletes through a Palestinian terrorist command.
In addition, five other films are proposed in the best feature film category. This includes the drama “in love, your Hilde” by Andreas Dresen with Liv Lisa Fries. It tells of the Nazi resistance fighter Hilde Coppi (1909–1943) in a moving way.
The film “The Sowing of Holy Figs Baum” by Mohammad Rasoulof also had opportunities about the mass protests in Iran after the death of the young Kurdin Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The Politrthriller was nominated for an Oscar in 2025.
With “Islands” the new film by Jan-Ole Gerster (“Oh Boy”) is in the race. The island thriller is about a tennis teacher on Fuerteventura and a mysterious disappearance. The music film “Cologne 75” by Ido Fluk about the legendary “Cologne Concert” by the jazz musician Keith Jarrett and the drama “Vena” are also nominated. Chiara Fleischhacker tells of an expectant mother who has drug problems and has to go to prison.
Which actors could win?
Prices are awarded in several categories – including directing, script and acting. Alexander Scheer and Sam Riley are twice nominated this time. Scheer can hope for an award as the best supporting actor in “Cologne 75” or for “in love, your Hilde”.

In the best female supporting role category, Leonie Benesch has opportunities for “September 5”. Liv Lisa Fries (“In Love, Your Hilde”), Mala Emde (“Cologne 75”) and Emma Nova (“Vena”) are nominated as the best leading actress.
What changes at the German Film Award?
There is a new face at the top of the German Film Academy. She now consists of actress Vicky Krieps and the re -elected President Florian Gallenberger. Krieps follows Alexandra Maria Lara, who previously held the management with director Gallenberger as a duo. The cooperation has been going well so far, the new team of the German Press Agency said.
Also new: The German Film Award must now do without prize money. The nominations and awards from public funds that have been endowed with around three million euros are instead rejected in the course of film funding. On the one hand, the premium helped to finance films, said Gallenberger.
On the other hand, there were always conflicts about the prize money. “Some thought that they had influenced the election behavior, others found that they would harm the artistic importance of the price. No matter how you stand, now we have a new situation and maybe it really gives the chance to look at the price more impartially and more freely”. Krieps emphasized that in the end it is about what Germany produces for films. The goal must be to support this.
Which winners have already been determined?
As in previous years, some award winners were announced in advance. This includes the casting director at Dorthe Braker, who receives the honorary award of the German Film Academy. She found the right line -up for well -known films such as “Nowhere in Africa”, “The Single” and “The Baader Meinhof complex”. A Lola in the most visitor -strong film category goes to the children’s film “The School of Magic Animals 3”.
How does the award run?
At the 75th edition of the German Film Award, around 1,700 guests are expected in the theater on Potsdamer Platz. Through the evening of the several hours of several hours, actor Christian Friedel (“The Zone of Interest”, “The White Lotus”) leads. The ZDF will broadcast the film award live in its streaming portal from 7 p.m. and at 11:30 p.m. on linear television.
