“This is not just a one-man job”

In February, DJ announced all the colors to have had a serious accident. Now he reveals how he is doing and what he is looking forward to.

For more than a decade, DJ has been all the colors, bourgeois Frans room (39), both nationally and internationally in the music industry. But at the beginning of the year he announced that he had suffered a serious accident. In an interview with the news agency Spot on News, the DJ now reveals what it has planned after this difficult time and what he wants both privately and professionally for the future.

You have been successful in the music industry for eleven years – how does that feel?

All colors: that feels quite good. (laughs) I have been on my belt for 21 years now – for eleven years very successful. I am happy every year to get all the booking requests, play at big festivals, make songs with big artists – at such a high level for so long. On the one hand, I am grateful for this and on the other hand you don’t get it for free. I work a lot to stand up again and again. Through my job I see the world and come to places that you wouldn’t plan that. It’s cool.

How do you manage to stay “on the carpet” despite the success?

All colors: I have great friends and great people with whom I work. They bring me back to the floor if I fly too high – but that doesn’t really happen. I have had the same friends for decades and I am grateful for that. Ultimately, I’m just a person, I only cook with water. Sometimes you should become aware that you are not better just because you are successful. Everyone has their problems, everyone has to wear their packages. My job is just as normal as that of a friend who is a primary school teacher – sometimes you talk about primary school children and sometimes you talk that you have met Kygo in the backstage area.

How has your music changed over the years?

All colors: I just experience a revival of my own music: With my current single “Flowers” I return to my roots – not only in terms of the sound, but also with the artist, with whom I worked together eleven years ago, Graham Candy. This closes the circle, which was really a matter close to the heart. We have been on stage together for eleven years. Just like my trumpeter Lahos, who has been on tour with me for nine years. It’s really nice.

How have you changed personally?

All colors: there were ups and downs. At the beginning of my career I was overwhelmed. Nobody explains how it will be on large stages, to be recognized on the street. That was very difficult for me at the beginning. I now live my dream. I just use my career for what I feel like. But I only had to learn that over the years.

Are you fighting stage fright after all these years?

All colors: The excitement never went away – and I never found a good handling of it. I now know that it is so and I know that I should eat something a few hours before I can’t eat anything. It’s okay to be excited. I also think it’s nice that I am still excited before the shows – because I feel that it still touches me.

Not always everything goes well with appearances – how do you deal with it?

All colors: I am a perfectionist. This is exhausting, but luckily I learned that I can’t control everything. At such moments you are professional through and through. I’ve already had a thousand breakdowns on stage, just smile and continue. I am lucky enough to have a team that gives everything in the background. All colors are not just a one-man job, all colors are teamwork. Without all these people who come together, I couldn’t shine like that. I do my homework, everyone else does theirs and then it works.

As a person in public, you will certainly be confronted with criticism – what does that do to you?

All colors: it makes less with me, but there was a time when I didn’t read any messages. That made me ready, Social Media has shown itself from its worst side. I slowly approached myself, read comments again, at some point I also answered it – but not everyone. I don’t want to give the internet roles. To date, however, it is still the case that some messages do something with me.

Do you sometimes feel like you as a DJ to take a back seat when a singer is on stage with you?

All colors: no. Everyone has their time to shine on stage – that is also what makes a show from me. I don’t just have my DJ setlist, I do entertainment, I make music. And when Graham Candy runs onto the stage and the crowd rages, then my show makes it all the more beautiful and happy.

Do you have a favorite feature or song as an artist?

All colors: Graham Candy. (laughs) But I had so many other great features. But there would still be a collaboration that I would like to do – with Pharrell Williams. The most personal song is “Please Tell Rosie” because it described my life and everyday life at the time. Which song I can hear is “Bad Ideas”. If it runs somewhere, I just have to turn it up loudly.

They are not only all colors, but also Fran’s rooms. As Fran’s room, what makes you happy next to the music?

All colors: In addition to music, cooking and sport are – two great passions in my life. Cooking from the hobby has also become more: while Corona I learned how to cook well. In the meantime I have a cooking channel that is going quite well.

If it weren’t for the music, would the profession of the cook have been something for you?

All colors: I always did what I was like. I’ve already worked in a patisserie – so I wasn’t quite far from the kitchen. But it could have been something else. I think I could have been happy in other areas – physiotherapist, kindergarten teacher, …

They had made their serious accident public in February – how has they been far from since then?

All colors: my friends, my family and of course my team were a great help. I noticed that people support me very much – whether in a close environment or far away. It was nice to experience so much positivity. That helped me a lot to feel better.

Summer is approaching, so also the festivals – what are they looking forward to?

All colors: I think I’ve never had so much time to prepare for a festival season. It is the first time that I will be on stage again since the accident, see the smiling faces and make music. I am looking forward to the festival season more than ever – after this bad accident and after this uncertainty, whether I can ever be on stage again. Now everything looks good again, I will be able to perform normally again.

Such appearances are certainly also associated with a lot of effort. Do you have certain rituals or processes to prepare for them?

All colors: I have people who keep my back free. For example, my tour manager always makes sure that I drink enough water. And there are three things I pay attention to – you never know what happens: I sleep when I can, I eat when I can and I go to the toilet if I can. I actually drive quite well with that. (laughs)

Do you need peace before such a performance or are you like to be among people?

All colors: I’m not calm before the performance. So maybe I’ll be a little quieter, but I’m not quiet. Then something moves in me, the adrenaline rises. It’s a moment that pits me up.

What do you want for the future – both privately and for career?

All colors: I would just like to put on more in Asia again. Before Corona it was the case that I played a lot and regularly there. Pandemic has become less. I am a big fan of Asia – of the many countries, of the many cultures there that I just like to take place musically. Privately has not changed as much: I want to live a good life and I think nothing stands in the way when I continue as now.
