US director James Foley died at the age of 71. He succumbed to a brain tumor against which he had fought for a year.
US director James Foley (1953-2025), known for the cult film “Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992) and numerous episodes of the successful series “House of Cards”, is dead. The 71-year-old died in his home in Los Angeles after a one-year fight against a brain tumor.
From Madonna to “House of Cards”
Foley leaves an impressive cinematic heritage. His most famous work is the film adaptation of the David Mamet piece “Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992), for which Al Pacino received an Oscar nomination. The film with its top -class line -up – in addition to Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris and Alan Arkin were also part of – is now considered a modern classic.
Brooklyn-born filmmaker specialized in atmospheric, noir-shaped stories and worked with numerous Hollywood stars. Filey began his career in 1984 with the music drama “Reckless” with Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn in the leading roles. This was followed by “dangerous girlfriend” (original: “At Close Range”) with Sean Penn and Christopher Walken. The film also included the Madonna song “Live to Tell” – the singer was married to Penn at the time.
The cooperation with the Pop Queen later continued Foley at the direction of various music videos and her feature film “Who’s Girl”. However, the work flopped to the box office, which Foley in retrospect described as a drastic experience: “It was a great life experience. This first failure is so shocking” ,.
Foley’s other known works include “After Dark, My Sweet” (1990), the al-Pacino films “Two Bits” and “Confidence” as well as the thriller “Perfect Stranger” with Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. In recent years he has also directed the two sequels of “Fifty Shades of Gray”.
The director also left his mark on the television area. From 2013 to 2015 he staged twelve episodes of the successful Netflix series “House of Cards” and turned for “Twin Peaks”, “Billions”, “Wayward Pines” and “Hannibal”.
Foley leaves his brother Kevin, his sisters Eileen and Jo Ann and his nephew Quinn. His brother Gerald had already died before him.
