In an interview, Liev Schreiber gives insights into his family life with his trans daughter Kai. The actor does not want to give advice for other parents.
Hollywood star Liev Schreiber talked about his trans daughter Kai for the first time in an interview with him. As can be seen from the conversation, Kai has not revealed herself in a classic coming out situation. “Kai was always who Kai is,” said the “Ray Donovan” star in an interview. “But I think the most important moment was when she asked us to change her pronouns. To be honest, it didn’t feel like a big deal for me because Kai had been so feminine for so long.”
Common commitment to LGBTQ youth
Schreiber told the magazine that his daughter will accompany him and his wife Taylor to the “A Place at the Table” gala of the Ali Forney Center in New York City on Friday evening. The center offers homeless LGBTQ youth accommodation and support and currently looks after more than 2200 young people through its drop-in center, which is open around the clock, and a network of 13 emergency and transition houses.
Although Kai does not fight with the same difficulties as many young people looking for help in the center, Schreiber emphasized the importance of engagement. “It’s not just about representing the trans community,” he said. “It is actually a community of people who have no great resources who have no access to help that are not protected and cared for. These are people who are rejected. People who get the most brutal side of our humanity. Some of them do not survive.”
Liev Schreiber does not want to give advice
Schreiber, who with his ex-partner Naomi Watts also has the son Sasha next to Kai, proudly commented on Kai’s self-confident attitude: “Kai is such a fighter. It is important that she says: ‘Hey, I’m trans’ and ‘look at me’.” The 16-year-old Kai already has considerable success in the fashion world. In March she gave her model debut when she ran over the catwalk for Valentino before appearing in an advertising campaign for the luxury label.
The 57-year-old is cautious when it comes to giving other parents of transcatal advice. “I don’t know the answer for your child,” he said in an interview. “I don’t know how it is for you. I don’t know how you grew up. I don’t know which religion you belong to or what your spirituality is. And when I tell you what I think about my child, it feels like an attack.”
With a laugh, however, he added: “If I would say something to someone who has problems with his trans teenager, then it is: ‘Teeners make headaches. They are difficult.’ It does not matter whether you are trans, because you will be through.
Schreiber is aware of the political attacks against the Trans Community, but remains hopeful. “I don’t want to go into it too much,” he said. “To a certain extent, I have the feeling that I do not want to overestimate this fear or concern. There are enough in the world what you can be anxious and worried about.”
