Melania Trump has unveiled a stamp in the White House in honor of the late Barbara Bush and recognized their progress.
First Lady Melania Trump (55) unveiled a stamp in honor of the late Barbara Bush (1925-2018) as part of a solemn ceremony in the east wing of the White House. The former First Lady celebrated her 100th birthday on June 8th.
In her speech, Melania Trump paid tribute to Barbara Bush – not only as a wife and mother of two US presidents, but also as a committed pioneer for social progress. “Although she is primarily known for her commitment in the field of literacy, she was also committed to strengthening women, changed the national discussion about AIDS and supported the rights of homosexuals,” said Melania Trump according to the “People” magazine. Melania Trump particularly emphasized Barbara Bush’s modern attitude: “I honor Mrs. Bush’s commitment to the essential role of women in all areas of our lives – whether as a managing director or a housewife.”
Family members and prominent absent
Friends and members of the late first Lady took part in the event, including Barbara’s youngest daughter Doro Bush Koch, who, according to the report, was moved to tears during her speech during her speech. Doug Tulino, the reigning Postmaster General, and Alice Yates, CEO of George & Barbara Bush Foundation, were also present.
However, the absence of Barbara’s son George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush, who have long been a distance from Trump, was remarkable. President Donald Trump himself did not appear to be at the event either.
A life in the nation service
Barbara Bush, born as Barbara Pierce and descendant of the 14th US President Franklin Pierce, married George HW Bush in 1945. The couple had six children, one of whom died at the age of three.
After eight years as a second lady during her husband’s vice presidency under Ronald Reagan, the couple moved into the White House in 1988. During her time as first lady, Barbara Bush remained a maternal figure for the nation, but her speech at the final ceremony at the Wellesley College 1990 was particularly remembered.
Despite a petition of students against her appearance – after the author Alice Walker was originally intended as a speaker – Barbara Bush did not let herself put her off and stepped into the lectern. With self -ironic humor, she quickly won the audience for herself. In particular, her closing word caused applause: she speculated with a wink that maybe someone in the hall one day “steps into my footsteps and resided as the marriage partner of the president in the White House – and I wish her all the best!”
At the stamp ceremony, Melania Trump praised, as Barbara’s iconic speech encouraged “women encouraged to go their own way in life”. She underlined: “Mrs. Bush’s legacy is characterized by her respect for traditions, while she broke with conventions at the same time.”
Inspiration for subsequent first ladies
Not only Melania Trump, but also the former first lady Dr. Jill Biden, described Barbara Bush as one of her great inspiration. : “Mrs. Bush reminded us that we all play a role when we make our communities better and stronger. And she brought together Americans from all social classes to do exactly that. I hope to do the same.”
Barbara Bush died on April 17, 2018, just a few months before her husband, who followed on November 30, 2018.
