The favorite has prevailed: “September 5” about the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich clears the German Film Award. Two double nominees go away empty -handed.
The thriller “September 5” by Tim Fehlbaum about the 1972 Olympic attack in Munich was awarded the Golden Lola at the German Film Award. The German Film Academy in Berlin announced this.
“September 5” won a total of nine prizes, including Leonie Benesch for the best female supporting role. The script, the directing and the cut were also awarded. The film by the Swiss director Failure Tree had gone into the race with ten nominations.
He tells the events at the Olympic attack on September 5, 1972 from the perspective of a US television team that was supposed to report on the competitions.
Instead, the journalists become live reporters of a hostage-taking of Israeli athletes through a Palestinian terrorist command. “September 5” is a gripping drama, told in a minute and calm. At the Oscars this year, the film was nominated for the best original script, but went away empty-handed.
Death of Margot Friedländer: Igor Levit fights with tears
The Lola in silver won the Polittriller “The Sow of Holy Peigenbaums” by Mohammad Rasoulof about the protests in Iran after the death of young Kurdin Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The drama “in love, your Hilde” by Andreas Dresen cleared the Lola in Bronze.
The sudden news of Margot Friedländer provided the most moving moment of the evening. Star pianist Igor Levit is visibly on the stage when he spontaneously praised the Holocaust time movement (103) with emotional words. Levit, who was actually on stage for a laudation for the best film music, called for a silent. The audience got up. Again and again Levit’s voice stalled and he fought with tears.
Liv Lisa Fries will be the best leading actress
The best leading actor became Misagh Zar for “the seeds of the holy fig tree”. Sam Riley, who was nominated twice in this category (“Cranko” and “Islands”), went away empty -handed instead.
Alexander Scheer also missed an award despite double resourization as the best supporting actor (“Cologne 75” and “in love, your Hilde”). Instead, Godehard Giese won for “Sad Jokes”. Liv Lisa Fries received a prize for the best female lead. She embodies the Nazi resistance fighter Hilde Coppi (1909–1943) in the film “In love, your Hilde”.
The German Film Award is one of the most important awards in the industry. Around 1,700 guests were invited to the theater on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin for the award, including the new Minister of Culture Wolfram Weimer.
