Humanity, friendship and empathy are the big topics of the ZDF series “Dr. Nice”. But this time the title hero has to deal with inner demons. His actor thinks that.
Actor Patrick Kalupa alias TV doctor “Dr. Nice” thinks it’s good that mental problems are no longer taboo in German television series. “In the 1990s, mental illnesses were often shown and stigmatized in the context of crime, very clichéd,” said the Berlin TV star (45) in a dpa interview. “Fortunately, it’s really different today.”
In the new “Dr. Nice” relay (Sunday, May 11th, 8:15 p.m., ZDF), Dr. Moritz Neiss visits a psychologist for mental stress. “The main character that I play, once a successful star surgeon, is not only experiencing physical, but also great psychological challenges after a serious accident,” said Kalupa. “The inner battles, which are reflected in the male behavior of my figure, are also illuminated.”
His “cardiac cinema” format is very modern, empathetic and differentiated with the topic of depression “and, with his special wit and humor, also brings a new lightness with it, which I think is very important”.
“Dr. Nice”: love scene in six degrees of cold water
Diseases such as depression or other mental disorders have not been spoken before. “That was a flaw.” The topic of depression only left the taboo zone in 2009 with the sudden death of football player Robert Enke. “His tragic death has touched many people and has moved the topic of” depression “into the field of vision. In the meantime, much more openly is being talked about and, above all, informed. Where you can get help, and how important an attentive and supportive environment is.”
There were also fun experiences during filming the new “Dr. Nice” relay. “In the first new episode” Old Scars “there is a nightly underwater loving series with my great fellow acting colleague Brigitte Zeh.” The scene was quite a challenge. “Swimming romantically in six degrees cold water with a breath! That was really challenging and we were happy when everything was in the box. However, the scene is great. “
