Sting reveals his fitness concept: “Vanity and discipline”

The British musician Sting is well in shape on its ongoing world tour. In the interview, he reveals how he keeps himself fit. He still feels pressure before every appearance.

The British musician Sting (“English in New York”, “Fields of Gold”) feels in top shape at the age of 73 and looks young compared to many colleagues. His wellness recipe? “Vanity and a bit of discipline,” revealed the singer and bassist of the German Press Agency in London. “I swim every morning and do a work-out with stretching exercises. I never raise weights, but I stay active.”

Constant fitness program since youth

His fitness program has hardly changed for decades. “As a teenager, I was athlete, so I just kept this routine,” said Sting, who has just released his new live album “3.0 Live”. “I never thought that I would get that far, but I’m very happy that it is so.”

When he had to cancel some appearances at the beginning of the year due to health complaints, this made headlines. According to the Sting, the reporting was completely exaggerated. “I had a sore throat. It’s like a football player with a swollen ankle. You can’t play football,” he said with a laugh. “It is a sports injury. No more and nothing less.”

In June and October on Germany tour

He has long since continued his “Sting 3.0” tour, on which he is traveling with a new, reduced tape line-up. In June and October, he will give several concerts in Germany with his power trio. “I love my work,” enthused the former policy front man and added a little incredulously: “It is the same job that I did with 23. Half a century has passed since then.”

Despite his long career, the pressure still feels before every appearance. But he makes the pressure himself, that is necessary. “I’m not nervous, but I’m prepared because you never know what happens when you enter the stage,” said the 73-year-old.

“You have to be in shape. You have to be attentive and awake. I take my job seriously, and the pressure is to be as good as possible and to entertain the audience. This is my job, and that’s the pressure – but it is imposed myself.”
