The Berlin director Mascha Schilinski is surprisingly in the Cannes competition. Stars such as Tom Cruise, Emma Stone, Tom Hanks and Kristen Stewart also come to the 78th film festival.
It is only her second feature film as a director – and he should bring her a breakthrough. The Berliner Mascha Schilinski was the only German to “look into the sun” into the competition of the Cannes Film Festival (13th to 24th May). The director, born in 1984, competes with filmmakers such as Richard Linklater or Wes Anderson for the main prize Golden Palme.
The glamorous film festival Cannes is famous for its star contingent. For the 78th edition, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Jodie Foster, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Joaquin Phoenix, Bono from U2, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone.
“Look in the sun” is a generation portrait of several women who live at different times on a farm in Altmark. 21 films have so far been the race for the golden palm. It is unusual that a comparatively unknown, young German director runs in the main competition. Most recently, Wim Wenders (2023) and Maren Ade (2016) were represented as Germans in prestigious competition.
“I kept looking at this email with the famous palm logo and wondered whether” Official Selection-in Competition “really meant the main competition,” said Schilinski of the dpa. “I just couldn’t believe it. The joy was and is huge.”
Far from the competition, other German filmmakers are represented in Cannes – such as Fatih Akin, whose new film “Amrum” with Diane Kruger runs premiere in the Cannes side section. Christian Petzold presents with Paula Beer in the Quinzaine of the Cinéast “Miroirs No. 3”.
August Diehl is the main actor in “The disappearance of the Josef Mengele”, the new film of the Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikow living in German exile.
Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix and other stars in competition
The two-time Oscar winner Stone can be seen alongside Oscar winner Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler in the “Eddington” contribution. Ari Aster’s film takes place in a city in New Mexico after a murder case.
US director Wes Anderson also has chances of the Golden Palm with “The Phoenician Casting”. The work, which is occupied with Benicio del Toro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and a number of other stars, was largely shot in Studio Babelsberg. It’s about the history of a family and a family business.
Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal play a couple of lovers
In the competition film “The History of Sound”, the currently very sought-after Hollywood stars Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal (“Gladiator II”) can be seen. They embody a couple of lovers in Oliver Hermanus’ historical drama. O’Connor, who was famous as Prince Charles in the series “The Crown”, can still be seen in a second competition film: “The Mastermind” by Kelly Reichardt is supposed to act from an art robbery.
Tom Cruise is a welcome guest in Cannes. This time he introduces the “Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning”, the eighth part of the cult series. Another Hollywood icon, Jodie Foster, can be seen in the film “Vie Privée” by Rebecca Zlotowski. In it she plays a psychiatrist who determines a death.
A former couple also comes
The literature adaptation “Die” My Love “by Lynne Ramsay sounds sensitive. It’s about a woman who struggles with her role as a mother and partner – prominently staffed with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. The former “Twilight” star Pattinson could meet his former partner and colleague Kristen Stewart in Cannes.
The 35-year-old presents her directorial debut in the UN Certain Regard section: the film adaptation “The Chronology of Water”. Two other acting greats present their debut films outside of the competition as directors: Harris Dickinson (from the Cannes winner “Triangle of Sadness”) tells of a homeless man in “Undin”. Scarlett Johansson is devoted to a senior citizen in “Eleanor the Great” who wants to reorganize her life.
The German Cannes hope Schilinski looks forward to this year’s film selection. “I think the program promises to become an exciting mix of established and newer cinema votes. I am excited about every single film and hope to be able to watch as many films as possible in Cannes.”
