At the 78th Film Festival in Cannes, Angelina Jolie takes on a role of honor: she becomes a godmother of the renowned Trophée Chopard.
On May 13th, the starting signal of the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is given. A little later, Oscar winner Angelina Jolie (48) will take on a special task: the actress acts as a godmother of the 25th honorary award Trophée Chopard. In a solemn ceremony on May 16, she will hand over the young talent to the emerging acting talent Marie Colomb (30) and Finn Bennett (26) ,.
“I am very happy to welcome Angelina Jolie as our Trophée-Chopard godfather,” says Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard. “Your impressive film career and your commitment make her an ideal model.” The award ceremony takes place as part of a dinner, which is organized together with Iris Knobloch, President of the Film Festival in Cannes, the general -leaning Thierry Frémaux and Scheufele.
“It is an honor for me to be a godmother at the Cannes Film Festival,” Jolie also delighted the task. “I am pleased to be able to appreciate young artists and their extraordinary work.”
Prominent predecessors and award winners
With the role as a godmother, Jolie joins the footsteps of illustrious predecessors such as Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Zhang Ziyi, Julia Roberts, Robert de Niro and Sean Penn. Last year Demi Moore presented the award to Sophie Wilde and Mike Faist.
The Trophée Chopard, launched in 2001, honors an emerging actor and an actress with promising careers every year. The former award winners include Marion Cotillard, Diane Kruger, Léa Seydoux, Florence Pugh, Jessie Buckley, Niels Schneider, Jeremy Irvine and Joe Alwyn.
Young talents in the spotlight
This year’s award winners have already had considerable success. The French actress Marie Colomb became known for her role in the “Laetitia” mini series and participated in the césar-winning film “Les Magnétiques” and in the nine-fold Goya-crowned “As Bestas”. The Irish-British actor Finn Bennett was last seen in Alex Garland’s “Warfare” and played in the series “True Detective: Night Country” alongside Jodie Foster.
Jolie himself was awarded the Oscar as the best supporting actress for “Girl, Interrupted” and was most recently seen in Pablo Larraín’s “Maria”. Her next acting project is Alice Winocour’s bilingual drama “Couture”, which she also produced.
