Cannes: Please don’t naked on the red carpet

Nudity and XXL dresses are now undesirable on the red carpet of the Film Festival Cannes. What is behind the dress code – and which outfits have caused a stir so far?

The red carpet in Cannes has always been a catwalk for stars and style queens – but also for fashionable cross -border commuters. In the 78th edition (May 13th to 24th) this could possibly change.

Because the organizers announced in advance for the dress code: “For reasons of decency, nudity on the red carpet as well as in all other areas of the festival is prohibited. Voluminous clothing, especially those with a large train that hinder the smooth traffic of the guests and make the seating in the theater difficult.”

Nipple or almost no fabric – a new trend on the carpet?

The red carpet on the croisette is always the scene of opulent robes, bold outfits – and sometimes also of debates about style and provocation. Bella Hadid or Kendall Jenner include the models that like to appear in daring and transparent outfits. Two years ago, Heidi Klum caused a stir with a striking dress from which her nipple flashed.

Does the Cannes dress code rule react to a trend? Outfits with a lot of nudity seem to be piling up on red carpets. Bianca Censori was almost completely naked on the carpet at this year’s Grammys alongside Kanye West. Actress Sienna Miller wore a transparent ruffle dress in Venice last year and covered her nipples with her hair.

On the other hand, stars sometimes wore very transparent outfits decades ago. In any case, the dress code for the evening premieres in Cannes is famous for its rigor. For example, it is prohibited (unlike the Berlinale) to come in sneakers or with large pockets. Smoking and evening dress are desirable, but also “an elegant top with black trousers and elegant shoes” are allowed, it says on the festival side.

As stars against high heels protested

In recent years, the dress code has felt a little looser. Ten years ago there was a debate about whether women were allowed to wear flat shoes on the carpet – after some women complained that they were banned from entering the festival palace due to flat shoes.

The following year Hollywood star Julia Roberts ran barefoot over the red carpet, Kristen Stewart demonstratively pulled out her high heels in 2018 in front of the photographers. 2023 Step Jennifer Lawrence the steps in flip-flops. It can be assumed that at least the stars of this new dress code rule should also not adhere to.
