Cannes – Over the years the number of films that have their world premiere at the Cannes Festival is increasing. On the occasion of its 78th edition, between tomorrow and 25, it is possible to verify that it continues to increase that amount in the various competitions. More and more titles are presented were competition, having even created a new space called Cannes Première five years ago.
There is also a world parallel to that of the various sections, official and secondary, which is the film market, where films buyers participate, actually the right of distribution, and vendors (sales agents). The schedules of the press functions do not always coincide with the market functions, but also in the latter you can see there around five hundred films, not yet released or of previous festivals (Berlin, Sunday, etc.)
Distributors buy for a certain country, although lately (increasingly) in the case of Latin America they acquire the rights for the entire region. The consequence of this new modality has been that there are less and less distributors, for example, in Argentina. The little ones cannot face the purchase for the entire region, since we are talking about figures that can be millionaire.
As usual, in the official competition the two countries that have the most films are France and the United States. Of twenty -one films, only one is from Latin America, “O Secret agent”directed by Kleber Mendonca (Filho)who was before in Cannes with “Bolurau” (2017) and “Aquarius” (2018), the latter with Sonia Braga.
This year one of the poorest for Argentina is revealed, since there is hardly any co -production with the United States, whose title is in English (“Drunken Noodles“) of Lucio Castroin one of the weakest sessions (ACID). But there is luckily another film, one hundred percent Argentine, the short film “Three”of Juan Ignacio CeballoS, at the Cinef (demand cinema). Its filmmaker is a 24 -year -old debutant.
The star film will be “Mission: Impossible. The Final Reckoning”eighth and – they say – last of the series, with the obvious presence of Tom Cruisand. It will be seen just on the second day of the festival and will premiere worldwide a week later.
Another memorable moment will also the presentation on the red carpet of “The Phenician Scheme” of Wes Anderson, who has many fans. The actors of their feature film number twelve will form, if the majority present, the most numerous delegation in the history of Cannes: Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Benicio del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mathieu Amalric, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brian Cranston, Rupert Friend and others. At the other end will be “Jeunes Mères”, with little known actors.
There are several names of directors who on two occasions won the gold palm, such as the case of Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Haneke, Emir Kusturica, Ken Loach, Balle August And more recently Ruben Östlund. But no one ever won three times and this year they could be not one, but two, those who achieve that record. We refer to the Belgians Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennewhich, after “Rosetta” (1999) and “L’Enfant” (2005), with mères axis ”could for the first time achieve triplet.
It has always been difficult to predict who will take the gold palm, since, unlike the Oscar awards, it depends on the decision of the nine jurors, this year chaired by Juliette Binoche. To appoint some possible candidates, the golden palm could well fall on “Nouvelle vague“, of Richard Linklater (“Before dawn”, “Boyhood”), which recreates the filming of “Unwins”, Jean-Luc Godard’s first film.
Other potential candidates would be “Alpha” of Julia Ducornauhis third film, who debuted in 2022 with “Titane” with a somewhat surprising gold palm; “Sentimental Value” of the Norwegian Joachim Triet (“The Wort Person in The World”) and “Die My Love” of the English Lynne Ramsaywith a strong cast (Rober Pattinson, Jennifer Lawrence, Nick Nolte) and the particularity of extra based on the homonym (in French) novel by Argentina Ariana Harwicz.
