The US acting icon Robert de Niro receives this year’s honorary palm of the Cannes Film Festival – and uses the stage of the opening ceremony for a political fire speech.
Active star Robert de Niro distributed against US President Donald Trump at the opening of Cannes Film Festival. “In my country we fight with all might for democracy that we once took a matter of course,” said the 81-year-old on stage. “That affects all of us. That affects all of us here because the arts are democratic.”
De Niro had previously received the golden palm of honor from the 78th Film Festival, which were opened in the evening. “Art hug diversity,” he said in his acceptance speech. “And that’s why art is a threat. That is why we are a threat to autocrats and fascists. America’s Philistian President has appointed himself as head of one of our most important cultural institutions. He has reduced the means and support for the arts, the humanities and education.”
Leonardo DiCaprio refers to him as a model
De Niro continued: “And now he has announced a 100 percent customs on films produced outside of the USA. Let it work on you for a moment. You can’t take creativity with a price, but apparently you can take it with an inch. This is of course unacceptable.”
“All of these attacks are unacceptable, and this is not just an American problem. It is a global problem. As with a film, we cannot simply sit back and watch. We have to act, and we have to act now, without violence, but with great passion and determination. It is time that everyone who is close to the heart of freedom is organized, protested and, of course, chooses.”
The laudation on de Niro had previously held Leonardo DiCaprio, who described his fellow actor as “the model” to “we looked up”. DiCaprio said about de Niro: “He doesn’t say much, but if he does it, it is important. Whether it is about his friends, his family, the fight for our democracy or the support of film art, he is always there.”
