Erik and Lyle Menendez could soon be released on probation: a Californian judge reduced the brothers’ sentence.
A Californian judge has given Erik (54) and Lyle Menendez (57) an opportunity for freedom. The two brothers, who were famous by a Netflix series, were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of their parents in Beverly Hills. They have been sitting behind bars for 35 years.
Judge Michael Jesic shortened life without the possibility of probation to 50 years to life. According to the California law for young criminals, released on probation because they committed the crime at the age of 26. For your release, however, you still need the approval of the State Provest Committee. Until it is decided, Erik and Lyle Menendez remain in custody.
Relatives say for them
: “I don’t say that they should be released; it’s not up to me to decide that.” But he believes “that you have done enough in the past 35 years to get this chance”. Erik and Lyle Menendez were switched on by livestream for the hearing from the prison in San Diego. Several relatives, a retired judge and a former fellow prisoner said.
The brothers were found guilty for the murder of José (1944-1989) and Kitty (1941-1989) in 1989 and sentenced to life imprisonment without probation. At the time, their defenders said that the two were in self -defense because they feared that their parents would kill them to cover up the years of sexual, psychological and physical abuse of their children. The prosecutors, on the other hand, represented the brothers as rich young men who were laid down on their multi -million dollar heritage.
The case of the Menendez brothers received great public attention last year from the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”.
