Benton died Sunday at his home in Manhattan, his assistant and manager of many years, Marisa Forzano, told The New York Times.


Robert Benton’s most outstanding films
Benton obtained his third Oscar for his script to Places in the Heart (1984), an autobiographical saga based on the harsh experiences of his grandmother during the great depression in Texas. He received another Oscar nomination for the direction of said drama, and was also nominated for his scripts for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), as a result of his collaboration with David Newman, The Late Show (1977) and Nobody’s Fool (1994). He also directed the last two.
Benton and Newman also wrote films, including There Was A Crooked Man … (1970), directed by Joseph L. Mankiewiczand the crazy comedy of Peter Bogdanovich What’s Up, Doc? (1972), and the duo shared the script credit in Superman (1978) with Mario Puzo and Leslie Newman.
More recently, Benton directed the highly valued The Human Stain (2003), starring HopkinsAnthony and Nicole Kidman in the adaptation of Philip Rothand Feast of Love (2007), with Morgan Freeman and Radha Mitchell.
Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), an emblematic drama about the emotional tension of divorce, also won Oscar awards for the main actors Dustin Hoffman (who was divorcing in real life during production) and, in a leading role, Meryl Streep.
