King Charles handed over one of his most important roles to throne to the throne, Prince William in a magnificent ceremony.

There is not often: King Charles III. (76) and heir to the throne Prince William (42) showed themselves on Friday side by side at a significant ceremony in the Westminster Abbey – without any other members of the royal family. The reason for the father-son appearance was the “Service of the Order of the Bath”, a traditional service that only takes place every four years and celebrated 300th anniversary this year.

Special milestone for Prince William

For Charles it was the first participation in the ritual as a monarch – for William it became a personal milestone: the Prince of Wales was officially appointed grand master of the order during the ceremony. He takes over an office that his father has held for almost five decades, and is typically entitled to the heir to the throne. Charles has been Grand Master of the Order of the Bath since 1975 – a role that is now symbolized to the next generation.

The ceremony was characterized by splendor and historical importance. Both Royals appeared in the traditional robes of the order: purple umbrellas with long drags, golden decorations and order insignia – a sight that was reminiscent of medieval rituals.

The Order of the Bath was donated by King Georg I in 1725 and distinguishes people who have made a special contribution to the United Kingdom – especially in the military or diplomatic area. The appointment of William as the grand master is considered a significant symbolic step on his way to the future role as a king.
