Udo Lindenberg is 79 years old and wishes instead of gifts: the suffering of the children in war zones should finally end.
“Shame and Scandal over all adults who wage wars,” says rock legend Udo Lindenberg in a current message from Unicef Germany. “The children are hit by bombs, have to run for their lives, starve! This madness has to stop,” the musician continues. The Hamburger celebrates its 79th birthday on May 17 and uses this personal occasion for an urgent appeal for peace.
The agony of these children can be justified by absolutely nothing, explains Lindenberg: “That’s why I don’t wish for a cake and no nice words for my birthday, but that all earthly citizens finally come to reason.” Humanity must win, the weapons are silent and the help arrive where it is needed most, the panic rocker said.
According to UNICEF, over 473 million children – more than every sixth child worldwide – grow up in a conflict area, including in Ukraine, Sudan or in the Gaza Strip.
Udo Lindenberg has been committed to children’s rights for many years
The artist, born in Gronau, has been supporting Unicef since 2001 and has been an ambassador for the organization for many years. His commitment began with a benefit concert in favor of the Afghanistan help at the time. : “The only comprehensive perspective for a fair world of tomorrow is the UN.”
Since 2011 he has also designed a Christmas greeting card for the children’s aid work every year. The “Udo cards” are among the best-selling people in the organization’s greeting card range. At the end of 2024, Lindenberg Unicef had the international reorganization of his well -known song “What are wars for?” gift. More than 40 years after the creation, has lost none of its topicality.
Lindenberg has already received several awards for his diverse commitment. Among other things, he received the Federal Cross of Merit and in December 2020 the “Honorary Award Children’s Rights” from Unicef Germany for his “extraordinary and authentic commitment to realize the right of every child to a life in peace and dignity”.
With his own foundation, he also promotes educational and water projects in Africa. The musician himself summarizes his credo: “Hate is never a way! Our weapon is the love of people. If someone dreams alone, if he is a dreamer, we dream together. Let it reality. Let us be at the start for peace!”
