The ESC organizer insists on strict neutrality, but Israel’s participation remains a political issue. The European radio union remains strict.
The controversy to participate in Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) has brought Spain a complaint from the organizer. The Spanish newspaper “El País” reports that the host of the competition that the European Radio Union (EBU) had threatened the broadcaster RTVE with a fine if its commentators again mention the Gaza conflict in the final.
“We can confirm that we talked to RTVE about this matter and clarified that the commentators are expected to keep neutrality in the broadcasts of the Eurovision Song Contest,” said EBU when asked. She did not mention a fine.
The Spanish broadcaster RTVE had already asked for a debate about the exclusion of Israel’s exclusion from the ESC. When moderating the semi -final, the commentators had spoken about the civilian victims of the Israeli War against the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip with more than 50,000 fatalities. The war was a reaction to the devastating terrorist attacks from the Gaza Strip to Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel represents a survivor in Basel: Yuval Raphael.
Last year protests against Israel’s participation overshadowed the ESC in Malmö, but larger demonstrations have failed to do so in Basel. Spain is represented with the singer Melody in the final.
