Tens of thousands were poured into St. Peter’s Square on Sunday to welcome Pope Leo XIV before his inauguration.
The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV (69) has begun and tens of thousands are watching: On Sunday morning, the new Pope on St. Peter’s Square was welcomed and cheered by a crowd from believers before his inaugural fair.
The 69-year-old started the day with a first tour in the Papamobil over the Piazza. In the open vehicle, he waved the cheering crowd smile, while the bells of the St. Peter’s Basilica rang and the crowd flags and “Viva Il Papa!” cried.
Pope Leo will then go to the basilica to start the introduction to his office with a number of rites. He first prays at the grave of St. Peter, who is the first Pope, under the main altar of the basilica. In addition to the handover of the official insignia, the pallium and the fishing ring, the obedience rite is also carried out. Twelve selected Catholics, including a bishop, have a priest, but also a couple and two young people, the new Pope on behalf of Catholics all over the world. The Pope then gives his first big service on St. Peter’s Square, which will take about two hours.
Delegations from all over the world
Pope Leo XIV is the first American Pope in history. At the end of the fair, the Pope wants to welcome the assembled official delegations in front of the Confessio Altar inside the St. Peter’s Basilica. Among them are the Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, US Vice President James D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio, as well as a 14-member delegation from Peru, led by state President Dina Ercilia Boluarte. In Peru, Robert Francis Prevost had worked as a bishop for eight years.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz and wife, Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, Bundestag President Julia Klöckner and Federal Council President Anke Rehlinger take part. Among other things, the European Union represents Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who comes accompanied by her husband.
Royals are also expected, including the royal couple from Spain and Monaco, and Queen Máxima from the Netherlands.
