With provocative texts, Finch is more of the outsider at “Sing my song” – but he doesn’t want to be that, explains the rapper in an interview.

Rapper Finch is probably the most unusual participant in the current season of “Sing my song” (Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. at VOX, too). Between the Fantastic 4, Bosse, Mieze Katz, Madeline Juno, Michael Patrick Kelly, Clockclock and host Johannes Oerding, he stands out with his hard beats and provocative lyrics. His exchange evening is on May 20. But the musician not only brings a different style, but also the clear opinion that he is often ignored in the music industry.

Also in an interview with the news agency Spot on News reveals Nils Wehowsky, as Finch is called with a bourgeois name that he has hardly been seen so far. He describes the defense against prejudices, who likes to talk about his East German origin and stand out in his songs by a rough expression, as a “fight against windmills”. In his song “If you are stupid”, Finch has positioned itself clearly against the right.

An artist like her did not yet exist at “Sing my song” – what convinced you to participate anyway?

Finch: The chance. As a Finch, you don’t get the opportunity to participate in big things – then of course I use it. I have always excited myself that as a rapper we are nowhere to be accepted and a little dead. In 2020 I said I would never take part in “Sing my song” – but simply because I didn’t believe that I was ever asked. I had the feeling that they talked a lot about you, but not with you.

Was you afraid that you won’t fit right around?

Finch: No, I always knew that I could put in and the show, I always knew. In the end, the reason why I am never invited to things can be just a personal problem and people who want to push me into a corner. “Sing my song” did it differently. They believe that I reduce the format that I show a good side of myself. And so far the reactions are also good and people say: “Ey, we misjudged you and we are happy that you were there.”

How was the rap scene’s reaction to your participation?

Finch: Actually positive. I think it is important how to sell there. It would be uncool that you don’t completely adjust yourself. But the way I am there, that’s really how I am. Nico Santos, Eko Fresh, SDP or Motrip wrote to me that they find it megagut.

So did you want to break the clichés?

Finch: What does clichés break is a fight against windmills. Some will still say in ten years that I am a sexist and fish on the right edge. But these are those who have never been involved, never get their ass up and just talk all the time. I use the format to settle with some people and address a few things that are angry with me. But you will not be able to change people because they have stuck in their opinion. With their narrow -mindedness, these people are shared that idiots are strengthened. As long as you don’t communicate with each other, nothing will change and the world is getting worse.

How difficult was it to show your feelings on the show openly?

Finch: I have already discussed some private things in my songs, so that was not a problem. This is nothing new for me – but if you don’t talk to me, then I don’t have the opportunity to open myself. If I had been invited to interviews or other things beforehand, then I could have talked openly beforehand. But I didn’t have the chance.

They often emphasize that they are not a singer – how big was the overcoming to sing?

Finch: It was very high. I am too lazy to take singing training again, so you could cut a few percent. (laughs) But music is never about being a good singer. With music you have to embody something, you need character, charisma. I would now say – without a boss to step on the tie – that he is not the best singer either, but he can do what many cannot do: he can transport emotions from the soul. We are very similar. I think I can still pick up more people than others, even if there are a few tones wrong.

Do you trust yourself now?

Finch: I sang a lot on my last album. Now it is time for something hard again that I am simply the old Finch again. People don’t need to be afraid that Finch is now only soft and political, that’s total nonsense. I made my political statements, now it’s enough again. I don’t have to lift my index finger every day. I also want to make music that is simply tolerated and is fun. There are many people who hear Finch because they can switch off and celebrate their heads. That’s why it will go more in this direction again.

You hoped to be inspired for your own music on the show. Did that work?

Finch: So there may be a few collaborations with the others. But has it inspired me now? I have so little inspiration lately because I was only on the go. Maybe I have to look at the things again, I don’t know everything anymore. We performed so many songs on one evening – you have no time to think about whether something is cool or not.

How did you get along with the others?

Finch: great. We had a megagute chemistry. We have already looked together at one episode and do it again. I have heard a few times from other seasons that there was always a stink boot that did not integrate into the group. We didn’t have that. In the beginning, Mieze Katz and I slowly score and check out how the other is on it. But there was one or two clarifying conversations and now we are all of the same cool.

For Michael Patrick Kelly, they even rummaged out their old Kelly Family shirts …

Finch: Yes, he definitely found that funny. But he didn’t want to sign it. He has given so many signatures in his life, he no longer does that – but it’s not bad either. It’s about memory.

What was the biggest challenge for you to deal with the songs of others?

Finch: I always searched for intersections. That was important to me: where are topics that affect both of us? With many I had to hear myself across, except at Aki Bosse. It was immediately clear that I would do “Frankfurt or” – if I don’t get it, I will not take part. There is no second option: the song about my hometown, or nothing. And there is no one who can take this song away from me.

At the beginning they said they struggle that they are not invited anywhere. Has “Sing my song” opened doors?

Finch: I struggle that I am not seen, yes. But now I also have to be careful: no hate, but I won’t be everywhere now. I’m not a mainstream entertainer, I’m still a little musician. With its high priority, “Sing my song” is something different from “Germany is looking for the superstar” without wanting to talk badly. I probably have to talk to bad things, then I’ll be invited. (laughs) But I definitely got a few inquiries, but I also canceled some.

How come?

FINCH: Inquiries from public broadcasters came-but if it is about the 40th time of politics and the right jerk in the east, I will also be fed up at some point. I gave my answers, I made my song, my statements. But then you have to go down a bit again and do not dead, then it is no longer credible. If you invite me because you want to make music with me or talk about music, always like to, but not always just the topic of politics. Why should I get this out of or straighten it out, what tapsing politics? I don’t wash the dirty laundry from the governing parties. They have to do it themselves.
