The “Cheers” star George Wendt is dead. His long-standing TV colleagues are now saying goodbye to moving statements.
The American actor George Wendt, known for his iconic role as a regular guest Norm Peterson in the cult sitcom “Cheers”, died in her sleep on Tuesday at the age of 76. This was confirmed by his family in a statement. “George was a loving family man, an esteemed friend and confidante for everyone who was lucky enough to know him,” said a spokesman. “He will be missing forever.” Now numerous colleagues are emotionally saying goodbye.
The news of Wendt’s death triggered a wave of mourning among his former co-stars. Ted Danson (77), who played the bartender Sam Malone in “Cheers”,: “I am shaken to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I send all my love to Bernadette and the children. It will take a long time to get used to it. I love you, Georgie.”
John Ratzenberger (78), who appeared as a cliffie in the series, also paid tribute to his long -time friend with emotional words: “For eleven years at ‘Cheers’ we shared a stage, many laughs and a place in the first row for one of the most popular friendships of television.
Rhea Perlman about George Wendt: “What a guy!”
He was a “true craftsman” – “modest, hilarious and full of heart”. In front of the camera he was the identical person like behind the camera. “With an impeccable comedic timing and deep loyalty to those he loved,” added Ratzenberger. Rhea Perlman (77), who embodied the waiter Carla in “Cheers”, also remembered the time together: “George Wendt was the sweetest, most gracious man I ever met. It was impossible not to like him. What a guy!”
Melissa Joan Hart (49), at the side of which Wendt could be seen in the further cult series “Sabrina – Total” that the sky had become a bit more funny due to her colleague’s death. It was exciting to have stood on the side of Wendt in front of the camera, and she was still a great “Cheers” fan. Eric Allan Kramer (63), who had a appearance as a guest star in “Cheers”, also had his say in the death of his colleague. “It was difficult to hear from his death …” Wendt was one of the “warmest and funniest types” he had ever met.
Six Emmy nominations for “Cheers”
Wendt was born in Chicago in the US state of Illinois in October 1948 and had eight siblings. His sister Kathryn is the mother of “Ted Lasso” star Jason Sudeikis (49). Wendt had the first film and series roles at the end of the 1970s and early 1980s- including in famous series such as “Hart but warm” or “M*a*s*h”.
Above all, the role of the Peterson norm should accompany him during his long career. Wendt appeared in all episodes of the eleven seasons on Sitcom “Cheers” from 1982 to 1993. For this purpose, he was nominated six times in a row for an Emmy as the best supporting actor in a comedy series between 1984 and 1989. He also embodied the figure in other productions, such as in “The Tortellis” or “Frasier”. The actor also received the “The George Wendt Show” named after him, which was stopped in 1995 after a few episodes.
