Hollywood star Kevin Spacey, who had fallen unexpectedly, received an award for his life’s work away from the hustle and bustle in Cannes.
Once Kevin Spacey (65) was one of the most sought -after performers of Hollywood, now he tried a quiet comeback in Cannes nine years after his last visit. The 65-year-old actor was awarded a prize for his life’s work at a gala event of the Better World Fund organization-albeit away from the official festival and with astonishingly little attention.
The event in the Carlton Hotel von Cannes was neither part of the official festival program nor attracted well -known guests. “Who are these people at all?” A photographer complained according to “The Guardian” about the lack of celebrities among the guests.
For the two-time Oscar winner, it is the first visit to Cannes since 2016. Only a year later, the #Metoo scandal started, as a result of which more than 30 men levied allegations for sexual assault and misconduct against Spacey. As a result, his career was practically a standstill.
The Better World Fund (BWF) said in advance in a statement that Spacey “is recognized not only for its decades of artistic brilliance, but also for its ongoing influence on the cinema and art”. It is a “great honor to welcome Kevin Spacey as a guest of honor and winner of the Better World Fund Gala,” said Manuel Collas de la Roche, President of the Better World Fund. “Kevin’s extraordinary contributions to film art have left traces of the audience and filmmakers. His talent, his depth and commitment to storytelling are an example of the transformative power of the film. We are very happy that we celebrate its legacy and presence at this important event.”
He introduces new film
Spacey gave a ten -minute speech on the stage, in which he praised his “best friend” and manager Evan Lowenstein (51). Through him, he “came out on the other side of this last challenging year, not angry, not embittered, not resentful, but more present, loving, more understanding and forgiving than I have ever been to my life,” said the actor. He also praised the organizers of the award: “Who would have ever thought that it was a courageous idea to honor someone who was acquitted in every single courtroom that he has ever entered.”
said Spacey reporters on the sidelines of the event that he feels surrounded by “so much affection and love”. “I heard of so many of my friends, colleagues and co-stars in the last week since this price was announced. I feel surrounded by support and it is very nice to be back.”
When asked about his plans for his drama comeback, the 65 -year -old explained: “Well, I’m glad I am working – I can tell you that!” Spacey has not only traveled to Cannes for the award ceremony. He plays in a new low-budget thriller called “The Awakening”, which is offered at the film market of the festival, the Marché du Film, potential buyers.
The film festival is said to have not submitted an invitation to Spacey. In a statement by the organizers, it was said that the award ceremony “is in no way connected to the festival”.
