Sarah Connor sings about hate on the net and open relationships

Sarah Connor often becomes very personal in her pop songs. She sings about her feelings as a mother and long -time wife – and also does not shy away from her feelings.

Sarah Connor’s fans had to wait for a new album for six years – for a long time in today’s music world. After her number one plates “mother tongue” (2015) and “Herz Kraft Works” (2019), she brings her out her third album in German with “Freigeistin” on Friday (May 23)-and sings about topics that move and polarize.

Have to let go – the feeling is probably concerned with all parents when the children are fledged. Connor, a mother of four, can also sing a song about it. In “Why didn’t anyone told me” she describes the emptiness in her when her oldest offspring Tyler (21) and Summer (18) moved to Great Britain within a year. There he studied music production and business, she made the British high school diploma in acting, dance and singing.

Children took off – time for their own needs

“I was startled by the force with which I met me,” Connor admits in a dpa conversation. The song says: “Where’s the little girl?

But a half -empty house (daughter Delphine is 13 years old, son Jax 8) can also be a blessing. As a mother and singer, she had had a lot of responsibility and structure in life in earlier years. After moving out of her oldest children and her last album, she increasingly looked after her own needs. “I wanted to see what happens when I travel alone and nobody knows myself. Who am I when nobody watches?”

Free spaces and open relationships

On the journey to himself, Connor apparently also thought about the concept of marriage. For 15 years, the Delmenhorster has been with the ex-boy group singer Florian Fischer (50), who also manages her. “I love you”, “deep as the sea” and “for life” are romantic declarations of love for their husband. Not the only ones on the album.

But Connor also illuminates the difficulties of a long relationship, which many certainly know. In “Why are we so” she sings from a stony path, days without kisses and expensive gifts “instead of intimate letters”. “Bad idea” is about polyamory – a relationship in which the partners are not exclusively with one person.

“My impression is: When you enter a marriage, you are talking about all of these things. You promise that you never feel attracted to someone else. This is absurd. We are people, we are resonance with each other,” said Connor of the dpa.

“My wish is to create a safe space and go to anxiety -free communication with my partner without you devaluing yourself for what you long for or what you may be missing.”

In the good mood song “My French Girlfriend” and the extremely emotional “The foreign”, Freigeist Connor also indicates relationships with women. But here she keeps it, as so often: exactly she does not want to explain her texts. “I’ve always written songs that are not autobiographical and still intense.”

“Heart in turmoil” is an appeal for peace. After the attack by the Hamas on Israelis in October 2023, Jewish classmates should have been protected by the police.

“For the first time, I told my 6-year-old boy about our history, the persecution and murder of the Jews and Hitler. This conversation moved me very much and made me sad,” says the musician. “My heart also breaks for the dead in Gaza. What a humanitarian catastrophe. We also talked about that.”

“The music is a shit”

In addition to thoughtful piano ballads, many of the 17 pop songs spread to “Freigeistin” in a good mood and are also linguistically authentic. In “Ficka” Connor makes fun of insults that circulate against her on social media. “I think it’s really bad – the music is shit” or: “The tits are not real, and your style is so bad”.

It is these honest words for which Sarah Connor is valued by her fans. While many pop songs only serve general places, the 44-year-old becomes concrete. After spending the winter months in her house in Provence, the singer will go back to Berlin – in summer there are some open airs, and a large arena tour next spring.
