Gillian Anderson: US star receives price at the Munich Film Festival

For over three decades, US actress Gillian Anderson (56) has shaped international cinema and television with its powerful female figures. This year she appreciates the Munich Film Festival with the Cinemerit Award. “Gillian Anderson always inspires with her incredible changeability. From FBI agent to sex therapist to the Iron Lady,” the festival directors Julia Weigl and Christoph Gröner rave about the press release of the film festival.

Anderson made the breakthrough in the 1990s with the cult series “Files X”. As a sharp and assertive agent Scully, she became a crowd favorite overnight and remained loyal to television even after numerous film projects. In particular, her representation of the psychiatrist Hannibal Lecters, Dr. Bedelia du Maurier, in the NBC series “Hannibal” from 2012 to 2015, underlined her acting skills.

She celebrated great success in 2020 with her embodiment of Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) in “The Crown”. Both an Emmy and a Golden Globe brought this role. A younger target group became known by Netflix production “Sex Education”, in which she as a frank sex therapist Dr. Jean Milburn breaks social taboos.

Anderson has already received numerous awards for her artistic work, including two Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes and three nominations for the renowned Laurence Olivier Award.

In addition to her acting career, Anderson has also made a name for herself as an author, producer and spokeswoman. Among other things, she published the book “Want. Sexual fantasies of women in the 21st century”, produced the television series “The Fall. Death in Belfast” and lent her voice like “The Widowmaker”. She was the first woman to take on a episode on “Files X”.

Anderson says about himself that feminism is in her DNA. According to the press release, her representation of the clever and self -determined agent Scully in “Files X” inspired a whole generation of young women to take scientific professions. In her publications, she actively campaigns for social justice, including with the support of organizations such as “Women for Women International”.

The Cinemerit Awards ceremony takes place as part of a gala in the German Theater. The 42nd Filmfest Munich runs from June 27 to July 6, 2025. The full program will be announced on June 18, 2025.
