Presented in 2020, “Miss 89”, its latest series marks Fabula’s first production at its Mexico headquarters and expands its partnerships to Los Angeles. “La Jauría” was sold to Amazon and HBO Max for the United States, and Fremantle announced last month that a third season of the series and a second of “Miss 89” were already in development. The series “Miss 89”, which will be broadcast in the United States from February 27, anticipated in its trailer that the series will show the glamor and apparent paradise of La Encantada, where 32 contestants prepare to compete in the beauty pageant of Miss Mexico 1989, to later reveal the hell that hides behind her organization, her circles of hell. In the first season Dolores, Miss Guerrero, with a perfect body and drug addict, will appear as characters; Jocelyn, Miss Chihuahua, whose sister goes missing; Angeles, Miss Oaxaca, single mother; Isabel, Miss Yucatán, cultured and with great business ambitions; Concepción, co-director of La Encantada; and Elena, culture teacher at La Encantada.

“It is the women who tell this story”, Puenzo told Variety. “A group of anonymous girls, four young ladies who come from different corners of Mexico with the dream of leaving their towns to win that tiny place. Girls who barely look at each other and who in those last months of training will become products of exhibition, negotiation and exchange in the media and politics. That will be his transformation: leaving the place of victims. Stop looking at each other suspiciously. Understand the power of collective action. They will begin to shake a world hitherto led by men.”

La Encantada cooks up something bigger than the annual beauty pageant that seduces the Mexican audience. Political pacts, economic alliances and millionaire businesses are also created there. However, none of the contestants denounces the parallel life that is happening. Some because they believe that to reach the crown you have to play the game, and others directly out of fear.” Like many women, they are beginning to open their eyes to how complicit they have been in a patriarchal system,” adds Puenzo. La Encantada is part of this factory of queens: doctors, nutritionists, trainers and, at the top, the guardian of the ideal of beauty in Mexico, Concepción. She is a disturbing, sweet and amoral character who will push her girls to become part of this sinister network in which bodies are exchanged goods. Because in that Mexico of 1989, sexual harassment and exploitation were understood as the price to pay for the possibility of becoming a Miss.”

Finally, add: “Beauty is certainly an excuse to talk about other things. La Encantada seems to be the playing field of power. This first season takes place in a confined universe: a heaven on earth that little by little will show its darkest face. There, the indoctrination is direct and brutal. Little by little, they will all discover a dark underworld of abuse and mistreatment that turns into a complex and sinister modus operandi from which it is impossible to escape unscathed. Knowing they are part of a chain that reaches the highest spheres, they are aware that they are in danger if they open their mouths.”
