Royal duel: organ against trumpet

If the organ is considered the king of instruments, the trumpet is the one that accompanied the rulers at almost all times and loudly announced their appearance. On Sunday, these two instruments met as part of the “Teatime Organ Music” in the Brucknerhaus. Master of the trumpet was Johannes Moritz, who has been principal trumpeter of the Bavarian State Orchestra and thus the Bavarian State Opera since 2018.

At the organ, the Upper Austrian organist Bernhard Prammer, who curated the Brucknerhaus series and put together a fine program for this late afternoon. On the one hand there is Baroque music such as the C major Sonata by Giovanni B. Viviani, the D major Sinfonia by Giuseppe Torelli and a D major Concerto that Johann Sebastian Bach adapted from Vivaldi’s 9th Concerto from his op. 3. On the other hand, there are also romantic sounds by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger and a cantabile by Enrico Pasini that makes you melt away. In between, organ pieces that John Stanley composed for organ solo based on the typical trumpet voluntaries, as well as excerpts from the variations on “God Save the King” by Christian Heinrich Rinck.
