Queere young people with suicide thoughts will find help in the USA under the hotline 988. The US government plans to delete the funds of pastoral care. Stars like Ariana Grande have something against it.
Pop singer Ariana Grande (31), reality star Paris Hilton (44), Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis (66) and many other stars have spoken out for the preservation of the LGBTQ+pastoral phone in the USA. They signed an open letter from the aid organization “The Trevor Project”, in which the offer is promoted. Under number 988, queer young people can help with suicidal thoughts.
According to reports, the funds should be withdrawn from the offer. “We are deeply dismayed by the proposal to delete the federal funds for the services of the 988 suicide and crisis aid specializing in LGBTQ+youth,” the petition said. A step that will have devastating consequences for young people across the country. “This is about people, not about politics,” it continues.
Around 1.3 million young people found help
According to the petition, around 1.3 million young people have been helped with suicidal thoughts since the start of the offer in 2022. 1.8 million queer adolescents have such thoughts every year. As the US broadcaster “CBS” reported, the Trevor Project accepts half of the call phone calls.
The English abbreviation LGBTQ+ stands for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans- and queer people, the plus sign is a placeholder for other identities and genders.
