“Let Russia be free” says the song of British pop duo. In order to remember the late Alexej Nawalny, the Pet Shop Boys even play at a memorial concert in Berlin – as headliners.
The Pet Shop Boys are reminiscent of the late Kremlin critic Alexej Nawalny with a song. Under the title “Hymn (in Memoriam Alexei Navalny)”, the British pop duo has published three versions of the song, including a new, around five -minute “Dance Mix”. In this, singer Neil quotes tennant excerpts from Nawalny’s prison letters and from his autobiography “Patriot”, as the duo wrote on Instagram.
It also says: “Free Russia, Let Russia be free, from the lies of its leaders” (“Freed Russia, let Russia be free, from the lies of its leaders”). In the video for the song mix can be seen, among other things, excerpts from speeches by the oppositional. Nawalny was the best -known opponent of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. He died in a Russian criminal camp in 2024.

The Pet Shop Boys said that Nawalny had dreamed of a Russia “that freed itself from Putin’s corruption and authoritarianism”. His courage and “unbroken spirit” have inspired to this day. The pop stars had already produced a first version of the song in February.
For a memorial concert on June 28th, the duo is as a headliner in Berlin, according to an announcement, to play a 40-minute set. In addition, Russian artists should also perform. A live conversation with widow Julia Nawalnaja and a screening of the documentary “Nawalny” are also planned.
